About

We believe the Earth is a wonderful thing and should be treated with respect but we also believe in beautiful design. The Bamboo Notebook embodies both of these philosophies -- bamboo is actually a grass, that grows quickly and has the strength of a hardwood. The pages are made from forestry-certified, 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Designed in California to turn heads and save millions of trees in the process.

The Problem

Every year 22 million acres of forested land is lost. DC Design wants to reverse that trend with The Bamboo Notebook. Bamboo is wonderfully suited because it:

  • has higher tensile strength than many alloys of steel
  • can be re-harvested every 3-7 years while timber trees take 30-50!
  • absorbs carbon dioxide and releases 35% more oxygen than hardwood equivalents

Our paper is made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper and forestry-certified using 100% renewable energies. Post-consumer material is wasted paper (e.g. office paper or newspaper) that has served its intended purpose. The greater the percentage of post-consumer material in the paper, the less resource intensive because it is closer to "closed-loop" recycling.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an organization that promotes the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. The FSC independently certifies that these their standards have been met, and bestows labels upon products that qualify. FSC certifies products (like paper) that have been sourced in an environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner.

The Process

Learning from a local bookbinding master,  Durell assembled the very first notebooks himself. He then carefully iterated to produce the final, beautiful notebook you see today. From those humble beginnings, we have expanded to a larger production facility but have retained the quality craftsmanship and attention to detail Durell showed all those years ago.

Our notebooks are made entirely in the USA. We purchase bamboo from Oregon then sanded and finished and shipped to us in San Francisco to be laser cut and engraved. Our paper is sourced from Neenah Paper headquartered in Atlanta, GA. From there the books are sent to Phoenix where they are smyth sewn and assembled to perfection.
